PRIVATE RESIDENCE
LOCATION: OAK BLUFFS, MARTHA’S VINEYARD, MA.
SCOPE: GARDEN AND PLANTING DESIGN FOR HISTORIC QUEEN ANNE VICTORIAN IN TRADITIONAL OAK BLUFFS DECORATIVE VERNACULAR
Working with the architect, the local historic commission, volumes of historic photographs and postcards, and interviewing neighboring octogenarians, the Queen Anne house and 1/6th of an acre garden were designed to evoke grandeur. The garden was to be totally visible to the public, obstruct no views from neighboring homes to the ocean, and provide maximum seasonal interest for the months of July and August. Lush gardens were designed around the edge of the yard viewed from the main porch of the house, and by the public from three surrounding streets, to achieve the illusion of greater space. Plant selections were thoughtfully considered to ensure salt tolerance, hardiness, and longevity. The house burned nearly to the ground in 2001 and both house and garden were totally reconstructed.
